At the age of nineteen, Lansbury—who had previously studied acting in London—made her big screen debut in the 1944 thriller, Gaslight. Interestingly enough, she had been offered the role after meeting the film’s screenwriter at a party. Believing her to be a good fit for one of the characters, he recommended her to the producers, who subsequently cast her as Nancy Oliver, a young, conniving maid. In the end, her performance earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
