Born Issur Danielovitch, Kirk Douglas epitomizes the self-made man. From humble beginnings, a ragman’s son, Douglas has appeared in over 90 movies, established his own production company and authored 10 books. He portrayed serious characters and is particularly remembered for his roles in war movies and westerns.
Douglas is credited with breaking the Hollywood Blacklist through his most notable movie, Spartacus. His achievements have been recognized through an Oscar for Lifetime Achievement and he received three Academy Award nominations.
Kirk Douglas attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York on a special scholarship due to his poverty. During this time he befriended fellow classmate, Lauren Bacall. Douglas and Bacall starred in a number of films together, including Diamonds in 1999. This was particularly noteworthy as Douglas underwent months of voice therapy following a stroke in 1996 to recover his voice. In this movie, he played a prizefighter recovering from a stroke.
