Often referred to as the “Godmother of Soul,” Patti Labelle will long be remembered as one of the most influential female vocalists of the 20th century. Labelle’s legendary performances began in the 1960s with her role as lead songstress of the group Patti Labelle and the Bluebelles. Her powerful, emotive voice carried her through a decades-long solo career that spawned worldwide recognition, 19 studio albums, two Grammy awards and a BET Lifetime Achievement Award.
15. Lady Marmalade
In the early 1970’s, Patti Labelle and the Bluebelles changed their name to Labelle. Soon after, in 1974, their first single reached the number-one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with a catchy, risqué hit about a New Orleans prostitute. Lady Marmalade has since been covered countless times, perhaps most notably when pop stars Christina Aguilera, Mýa, Pink and Lil’ Kim introduced the song’s spicy appeal to a new generation through the 2001 Moulin Rouge! soundtrack.
