Posted in Entertainment on Jan 17th, 2019
Sometime in the 1990s, TLC, then known as The Learning Channel, began to shift away from learning and educational content, and focus more on reality television. Life in America was changing, after all, and consumers weren’t very interested in the offerings available on The Learning Channel. Rebranding started in earnest in 1998, with the introduction of a new tagline, “Life Unscripted.” The new TLC enjoyed modest success with shows such as A Baby Story, American Chopper, and Trading Spaces. The network continued to expand reality themed programing, although you could still find a bit of learning thrown into the mix. As TLC’s reality TV offerings expanded, so did other networks. Shows such as Keeping Up with the Kardashians changed the face of reality TV. Suddenly, everyone wanted a piece of the reality TV pie.
15. Kate Gosselin - Kate Plus 8 - $200,000
John and Kate Plus 8 originally debuted on Discovery Health in 2008, after the couple gave birth to a set of septuplets after a set of twins. The show moved to TLC two years later, and has followed the family as the children have grown, Jon and Kate have divorced, and the family has moved. The last episodes aired in 2017, but that doesn’t rule out a return for the Gosselin family.
