The 10 Worst Singing and Acting Performances in a Movie Musical
Posted in Humor on Jan 19th, 2019
How refreshing to see that the genre of the magical movie musical seems to be making a resurgence in our culture. Movie musicals help us to escape into a temporary realm of song and dance, if even for a couple of brief hours to help us leave behind our drab realities. A few years ago, we had La La Land, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture! Oh wait… Sorry. But they came close, didn’t they? 2017 brought us the Greatest Showman and Pitch Perfect 3. Next year we will see the live action movie musical remake of the Disney’s Aladdin. There is also talk of development plans for The Lion King, West Side Story, Guys and Dolls and Miss Saigon.
History has demonstrated, that even today, with all the sexy technology at our disposal, these movies can be either very well done or a complete sh*t show. What ever happened to dubbing the voice of inadequate vocalists, as was regularly common practice during the golden age of movie musicals?
10. Burt Reynolds - Best Little Whorehouse in Texas
It would seem that a Broadway musical adapted for the screen and starring Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds might be a good formula for success, especially during the ’80’s when both of these stars were realizing their celebrity apex. Sadly, the lack of on-screen chemistry between Parton and Reynolds leaves much to be desired. It almost feels as though Reynolds strutted directly from the soundstage of Smokey and the Bandit, still mustached and macho, to attempt dancing and singing his way through this Texan-based travesty. Best Little Horror House in Texas might be a more fitting title.
